How Much Can Manufacturers Improve OEE?
Manufacturers in the ten published before-and-after cases Godlan analyzed improved OEE by a median of 9.7 points. Individual production lines gained between 1.3 and 41.9 OEE points, with five of the ten improving by at least 10 points. The largest gains occurred in programs that included continuous machine monitoring, while results varied based on starting OEE, equipment, production environment, and the improvement strategy used.
Manufacturers who finish a structured OEE improvement program gain a median of 9.7 OEE points. Ten production lines with published before-and-after scores moved between 1.3 and 41.9 points. Five of them cleared 10 points.
We counted only plants that published both numbers. Published case studies supplied line-level measurements across a range of countries and industries, vendor rollout data added real-world deployments, and independent industry research priced the same losses in dollars. Each section below prices one part of the gain.
Key Takeaways
- Ten measured production lines gained a median 9.7 OEE points, ranging from 1.3 to 41.9.
- The two largest gains in the reviewed cases, 35 and 41.9 OEE points, came from programs that incorporated machine monitoring or sensor-driven maintenance.
- Quality moved least on three of the four lines publishing factor-level data, so scrap-first programs chase the smallest number on the board.
- One Peruvian bottle line converted 10.2 OEE points into PEN 76,109.98 a year, 17% of that line’s profit.
How Godlan Calculated the OEE Improvement Benchmark
Godlan reviewed published manufacturing case studies and real-world OEE deployments that reported both a starting OEE score and a measured OEE score following an improvement program. We included ten production lines with comparable before-and-after measurements and calculated the median OEE improvement in percentage points.
The programs included machine monitoring, predictive and preventive maintenance, scheduling improvements, setup reduction, operator training, and other operational changes. Because the facilities involved, starting OEE scores, measurement periods, and improvement methods differ, these results should be used as benchmarks rather than guaranteed improvement targets for an individual manufacturer.
How Many OEE Points Manufacturers Actually Gain
Evocon measured 55-60% average OEE across 3,500+ connected machines in 50+ countries and found roughly 6% of manufacturers reach the 85% world-class threshold. That leaves most plants 25 points short. We ranked every published program by the points it recovered, as the table below shows.
| Production Line | Location and Year | OEE Before | OEE After | Points Gained | Months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic injection moulding (JMMP, 2026) | Spain, 2025 | 53.9% | 95.8% | 41.9 | 12 |

Key Insights
- Five lines started below 55% OEE. Four of those five gained at least 15 OEE points, suggesting that low-performing lines may offer greater room for measurable improvement.
- The Türkiye casting plant gained 20.9 OEE points in three months, demonstrating that significant improvement can occur within a relatively short measurement period when the underlying constraint is addressed.
What Is a Realistic OEE Improvement Target?
There is no universal OEE improvement target for every manufacturer. In the ten published cases Godlan analyzed, the median improvement was 9.7 OEE points, but individual results ranged from 1.3 to 41.9 points.
Starting OEE matters. Four of the five production lines that began below 55% OEE gained at least 15 points, while higher-performing lines generally had less opportunity for improvement. The size of the opportunity also depends on whether the primary constraint is availability, performance, quality, or a combination of factors.
Manufacturers should establish a baseline OEE score, identify the factor creating the largest loss, and estimate the financial value of recovering specific production hours before setting an improvement target.
How Long Does It Take to Improve OEE?
Published improvement timelines vary significantly. In the cases Godlan reviewed, an aluminum billet casting operation in Türkiye gained 20.9 OEE points in three months, while two monitoring and improvement programs reported gains of 35 and 41.9 points over twelve months. Other studies reported before-and-after results without specifying the full improvement period.
The data does not support a single expected timeline for OEE improvement. Results depend on the starting condition, the loss being addressed, equipment, data visibility, operational discipline, and improvement strategy.
Score Your Plant Before You Fund the Program
Godlan's OEE Calculator turns one shift of production data into a score and names the factor holding it down. The ERP ROI framework then prices the points you plan to recover. Godlan has advised discrete manufacturers for 40 years.

Which Improvement Lever Returns the Most Points
Every program in our set attacked one primary loss first. Each lever returned a different number of points, as our analysis below shows.
| Improvement Lever | Measured Result | Plant |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous machine monitoring | OEE climbed from 40% to 75% in twelve months | Toftan (Evocon) |
| OEE monitoring rollout | OEE improved 20% in six months | HKScan (Evocon) |
| Predictive maintenance, oil and vibration sensors | Availability climbed from 75.6% to 98.0% | Spain injection moulding (JMMP, 2026) |
| Scheduling and recipe standardization | OEE climbed from 53.4% to 74.3% in three months | Türkiye billet casting (IJFMR, 2026) |
| SMED on mould changes | Mould change fell from 96 minutes to 55 minutes | Peru bottle SME (IJIE, 2025) |
| TPM with operator training | OEE climbed from 70.8% to 79.9% | Indonesia CNC lathe (OPSI, 2022) |
Key Insights
- Monitoring programs produced some of the largest improvements in the cases reviewed. Toftan increased OEE from 40% to 75% in twelve months, while HKScan reported a 20% improvement within six months of deploying OEE monitoring.
- The Peruvian program cut mould changes 43% and moved performance 7 points, the widest factor movement it produced.
Where the Recovered Points Come From
Plants rarely gain evenly across the three OEE factors. Four studies published factor rates on both sides of the program, which exposes the pattern in our analysis below.
| Production Line | Availability | Performance | Quality | Points Gained |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Injection moulding, Spain (JMMP, 2026) | 75.6% to 98.0% | 71.4% to 97.7% | 99.6% to 99.99% | 41.9 |
| Auto sector plant, Pakistan (Sustainability, 2024) | 76% to 89.75% | 72% to 72.68% | 59% to 73.82% | 15.0 |
| Plastic bottle SME, Peru (IJIE, 2025) | 86.76% to 91% | 86% to 93% | 94.49% to 96% | 10.2 |
| Press shop rolling, India (Inventions, 2022) | 84.82% to 89.71% | 20% to 22.64% | 95.33% to 96.73% | 3.5 |
Key Insights
- Quality moved the least on three of the four lines. Two of those three already held quality above 94% before anyone touched the equipment.
- Pakistan’s plant broke the pattern. Quality climbed 14.82 points and outpaced availability, because that plant opened at a 59% quality rate.

What a Maintenance Strategy Shift Returns
Most OEE points hide behind stopped machines. NIST and IJPHM measured what manufacturers recover when they stop running equipment to failure, and our data indicates the swing lands in availability first.
| Change in Approach | Measured Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive and predictive over reactive | 52.7% less unplanned downtime | IJPHM, 2021 |
| Preventive and predictive over reactive | 78.5% fewer defects | IJPHM, 2021 |
| Predictive over preventive | 18.5% less unplanned downtime | IJPHM, 2021 |
| Heaviest advanced maintenance investment | 44% less downtime | NIST, 2020 |
| Least reactive quartile against most reactive | 4.0% of planned production time lost against 13.0% | NIST, 2020 |
| Predictive maintenance platform users | 50% less unplanned machine downtime | Siemens, 2024 |
Key Insights
- Nine points of planned production time separate the least reactive quartile from the most reactive quartile. That gap alone rewrites an availability rate.
- Siemens reports its predictive maintenance users recouped the investment within three months, faster than the payback window on most capital equipment.
What the Recovered Points Are Worth
OEE points convert to money through hours a plant sells and orders it keeps. Siemens priced the hours. NIST priced the orders. The table below prices both.
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of one lost production hour, automotive | $2.3 million | Siemens, 2024 |
| Unplanned downtime as share of revenue, world’s 500 largest companies | 11% ($1.4 trillion) | Siemens, 2024 |
| Preventable maintenance losses, US discrete manufacturing | $119.1 billion | NIST, 2020 |
| Lost sales inside that figure | $100.2 billion | NIST, 2020 |
| Annual loss removed by 10.2 OEE points, one bottle line | PEN 76,109.98, 17% of line profit | IJIE, 2025 |
| Maintenance cost reduction, predictive platform users | 40% | Siemens, 2024 |
Key Insights
- Lost sales carry 84% of the $119.1 billion NIST priced. A stopped machine bills the plant twice. Idle hours cost the shift, then late orders cost the customer.
- The Peruvian line turned a single-digit gain into 17% of its own profit, which puts 10 points inside the reach of a mid-market P&L.
How Manufacturers Measure and Sustain OEE Improvement
Improving OEE requires more than measuring a baseline and making a single process change. Manufacturers need ongoing visibility into availability, performance, quality, machine cycles, downtime reasons, production counts, and scrap to determine whether OEE improvements are sustained.
Godlan helps discrete manufacturers connect Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine) with Prophecy IoT® to bring cycle-level shop-floor data into live dashboards for manufacturing and OEE. This visibility helps operations teams identify which machines, shifts, work centers, and loss categories are affecting OEE and measure whether improvement initiatives are producing lasting results.
Manufacturers can use connected production data to monitor:
- OEE by machine, line, work center, or shift
- Availability and unplanned downtime
- Actual versus ideal cycle time
- Minor stops and reduced speed
- Production counts and throughput
- Scrap, rework, and quality losses
- Improvement trends over time
Start with Godlan's OEE Calculator to establish your baseline, then use the ERP ROI framework to estimate the financial value of the production capacity you could recover.
